There are plenty of twists in the story of Jesus of Nazareth, but is that enough to sustain two feature-length sequels to The Passion of the Christ? Mel Gibson seems to think so. The Oscar-winning director (who also directed the recent Mark Wahlberg action movie Flight Risk) will be splitting The Resurrection of the Christ, his forthcoming return to Bible tales, into two parts. Both films are set to premiere in 2027.
Specifically, Part One of The Resurrection of the Christ will premiere on Good Friday, March 26th, and then Part Two will premiere on May 6th (40 days later, otherwise known as Ascension Day).
Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in Gibson’s original 2004 epic, will be returning to the role. Yes, the Person of Interest star is now 56 years old (a smidge older than 33), but Gibson will be digitally de-aging him for the project.
