Peter Crombie, the actor who played “Crazy” Joe Davola on Seinfeld, has died at the age of 71.

Crombie appeared on Seinfeld’s fourth season, portraying a mentally troubled writer named Joe Davola. Over a five-episode arc, his character develops an immense disdain for Jerry while becoming obsessed with Elaine (who he briefly dates). In the episode “The Opera,” he famously dresses up in full makeup as the clown from the opera Pagliacci.

Crombie’s other television credits included Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Walker, Texas Ranger, Law & Order, and NYPD Blue. He also had bit roles in films like Born on the Fourth of July, Natural Born Killers, and Seven.
