Step aside Dracula, Edward Cullen, and the rest of our vampire canon to-date. A new bloodthirsty iteration of the mythical creature has emerged in an unlikely suspect in the trailer for Universal Pictures’ Abigail — in theaters April 19th.

Helmed by Radio Silence, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett behind Ready Or Not (2019), Scream (2022), and Scream VI (2022), Abigail is a bit of a thriller within a thriller. The film follows a group of criminals who kidnap a 12 year-old ballerina in hopes that her wealthy father will pay their $50 million ransom if they keep her safe overnight. This mission quickly proves to be even more precarious than they’d imagined, though, when the young girl is revealed to be a vampire.

Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the film appears to pack plenty of bloody action and biting humor to boot — as characters quip in the trailer about whether they’re dealing with an Anne Rice-esque or True Blood villain. Abigail stars Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, and Giancarlo Esposito. (Abigail is one of Cloud’s final on-screen performances after his passing in July.)
