I’m not an immigration policy expert, nor do I pretend to be one, and I won’t even begin to try to debate the complexities of such a difficult and deeply nuanced issue. Nor probably should Dr. Phil, a clinical psychologist who became television famous after Oprah Winfrey plucked him from obscurity and gave him his own show in the early 2000s. Yet over the last year, Dr. Phil has aligned himself with the Trump Administration and has gone out in the field with ICE agents as they’ve conducted raids across the country — with a camera crew of course in tow.
On this week’s episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Dr. Phil appeared as a panelist and was asked a pretty matter of fact question: “Why are you going on these ICE raids? You’re a guy who we know for so many years who has been working to put families together, to bring families who are apart and heal them. And now you’re going on raids with people who are literally separating families.”
Seemingly taken aback, Dr. Phil called Maher’s comments “bullshit” and immediately gravitated to talking points about how ICE agents are being doxxed by Democratic politicians. He then claimed that he’s seen the files of the immigrants who’ve been arrested on during these raids, adding that, “They’ve got a rap sheet, 12, 14 different cases long of child predators that they’re taking off the street.”

“Nobody, nobody wants that,” Maher responded. “We all didn’t want violent criminals and gangs. But that pivoted to going to Home Depot… the ones standing in front of a Home Depot just looking for an honest day’s work… those are the good people.”
Dr. Phil didn’t really have a response.
