Wednesday are back with another new song from Bleeds, their upcoming sixth studio album. “Pick Up That Knife” comes with a grainy, camcorder-shot music video of a couple making out in the woods and other friends gorging themselves on watermelon, as directed by Sara Melosh. Watch it below.
“‘Pick Up That Knife’ is a song that revolves around feelings of helplessness, when every minor inconvenience hurts double cause you’re close to giving up,” singer-guitarist Karly Hartzman said of the new song. “It’s also about when our pedal steel player Xandy threw up in the moshpit during the Death Grips set at Primavera Sound in 2023.”
“Pick Up That Knife” is the second single Wednesday have shared from Bleeds so far, following “Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)” and “Elderberry Wine.” The follow-up to 2023’s Rat Saw God arrives September 19 via Dead Oceans and was produced by Alex Farrar, who also worked with the twangy rock five-piece—Hartzman, guitarist MJ Lenderman, lap steel and pedal steel player Xandy Chelmis, bassist and pianist Ethan Baechtold, and drummer Alan Miller—on both Rat Saw God and Twin Plagues.
Shortly after releasing their upcoming album, Wednesday will embark on a North American tour with support from Daffo and Friendship. (However, Lenderman will not be performing with the band on that route, as he recently revealed that while he’s still a member of Wednesday in the recording studio, he’s not joining them on the road.) Get a peek at what to expect from their live renditions with their recent television debut performing “Elderberry Wine” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
