Paul Simon has canceled a pair of concerts scheduled in Philadelphia this weekend due to “chronic and intense back pain” that requires immediate surgery.
“Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention,” Simon, 83, said in a statement released Saturday. “Unfortunately, we have to cancel these shows at this time, as we don’t have the ability to reschedule them.”
“However, we are hopeful after this minor surgical procedure which has been scheduled in the next few days, Paul will be able to complete the tour as well as look into returning to make up these dates,” the statement added.

The impacts shows were part of Simon’s “A Quiet Celebration Tour,” his first extensive North American outing in seven years. The legendary songwriter had previously retired from touring after suffering severe hearing loss, but was able to return to the road after working with the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss.
As of now, Simon is scheduled to resume touring on July 7th in Long Beach, California. See his updated tour schedule below, and look for tickets here.
