Sloane Stephens takes an early exit at BNP Paribas Open

No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia, who seemed poised for stardom after her runnerup finish here last year, continues to struggle and lost in the second round to unseeded 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1. Kasatkina will drop out of the top 20 in the next world rankings. Wild-card entrant Jennifer Brady, who turned pro in 2015 after two seasons at UCLA and is No. 83 in the world, reached the third round by upsetting No. 19 seed Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Brady, a Florida resident, is 3-0 against Garcia this year.
