LG officially announces its ultralight 17-inch Gram laptop

LG has announced new 17-inch and 14-inch laptops as the latest additions to its lightweight Gram lineup. The 17-inch was first spotted as an FCC listing and then later on Best Buy on a since-deleted page. In the past, these computers have been easy on the shoulders for carrying, but what they provide in convenience, they sometimes lack in performance.

The 17-inch model weighs in at just under three pounds despite its significantly larger size. Like the smaller Gram, it’s powered by an 8th Gen Core i7 processor (the 8565U) and has 512GB of storage and 16GB RAM. Its display runs at a higher native resolution of 2560 x 1600 than the 14-inch Gram. There’s also a fingerprint sensor for convenient sign-ins. LG is claiming that it can achieve 19.5 hours of battery life on a single charge.

Meanwhile, the 14-inch 2-in-1 Gram can double as a tablet when its keyboard is flipped behind the touchscreen display, and it weighs just 2.53 pounds. It comes with a Wacom pen for doodling. The screen is a 1080p IPS LCD. It is also powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, and it runs Windows 10 Home. It has 16GB of RAM with 512GB of storage. LG says its 72Wh battery can last up to 21 hours on a charge, which seems rather optimistic for real-world use.

For both battery life estimates, LG is using a newer version of the MobileMark benchmark tool than in the past when the company used outdated software for impressive-but-inaccurate battery figures. Both laptops have a 72Wh battery, so it’s not surprising the 17-inch Gram can’t quite match the smaller laptop; it’s pushing a bigger display at a higher resolution.

The 17-inch model has three USB-A 3.1 ports plus one USB-C port. The 14-inch Gram loses one of the USB-A ports, but otherwise, both share a headphone jack, microSD slot, a full-size HDMI output, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0.

The 14-inch LG Gram is coming soon with pricing and exact availability to be announced, while the 17-inch model costs $1,699.99 and isn’t yet listed at any stores.
